GENERATIONAL LIVING FOR MAR VISTA BEGAN AS AN INVESTIGATION INTO DENSIFYING A HISTORIC DISTRICT OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. THE MASS OF THE BUILDING WAS PARAMETRICALLY DESIGNED TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE AVAILABLE DAYLIGHT. THE BRIDGING BETWEEN SOLID MASSES ALLOWS FOR MORE DAYLIGHT TO REACH THE INNERMOST PARTS OF THE BUILDING WHICH WOULD OTHERWISE BE WITHOUT WINDOWS. THE BUILDING IS PROPOSED ON THE NORTHERN EDGE OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD, AS TO NOT CAST DRAMATIC SHADOWS ON ANY OF THE EXISTING HOUSING, AND TO BE ADJACENT TO THE STREETCAR STOP.
THE BUILDING ENCOURAGES A VISUAL AND PHYSICAL CONNECTION TO OUTSIDE, PROVIDING VARIOUS TERRACES AND COURTYARDS. BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS LIES A PLAZA GIVING AMENITY TO THE RESIDENTS AND SURROUDNING COMMUNITY, INCLUDING RESTAURANTS, RETAIL STORES, A GROCERY, A GYM AND CHILDCARE.
